To attain and maintain prominence in its field of work an organisation needs to understand the business environment in which it works.

Factors like changes in legislation, new competitors and innovations in the field need to be researched, understood and rated on their potential impact to the organisation.

This is often a considerable piece of work and, as it does not need to be done very often, tends not to be part of anyone’s task list.

Working with the Senior Management Team and the Board, I work up a scheme of the scanning exercise and a timescale.

When the scan is complete the task ends with a presentation and discussion to figure out an action plan.
